Greek Theater!

Back in Ancient Greece they invented a little thing called 'theater'. Theater was plays and shows that were paid for by the rich and performed by the artists. They would dress in masks and colorful clothes and they would build sets to set the scene. The two most common types of plays were 'Tragedy' and 'Comedy'. Tragedies were serious plays that spoke about war, love, hate, and betrayal. In a tragedy, there is usually a tragic hero who does good in the play until they develope a tragic flaw. The tragic flaw, usually hubis or pride, causes the downfall of the character. The other type of theater is Comedy. In comedies, the play is filled with humor and sarcasm. These types of plays often made fun of politics or respected people. In other words, comedies were the total opposite of tragedies.

Speaking from my own experience, Greek theater is very similar to theater today. We still dress up in costumes and build sets for our shows. We still wear make-up and masks if we have to. Another thing that is still very similar is the way our theater seats are set up. Greek ampitheaters were almost horseshoe shaped and the way you seat people for a show, you want everyone to be able to see every part of the stage, and so far, round seating has worked the best. Everything about theater today is heavily influenced by the Greek foundation of theater.

In this theater you can see the horseshoe shape of the seating and the stage. The theaters were usually built to have no roof and each row of seating goes up higher than the previous seat. Most Greek theaters were made from stone or brick-like material and they were considered to be for the rich. I think it would have been awesome to see a play back in ancient Greece.

That is all for todays blog, and thank you for reading.
