The Punic Wars!

Today we shall discuss the Punic Wars and it is going to be fun I tell you, FUN! I like discussing these wars because they lasted for many years and, at one point, everybody won something.
Okay, let's get started...

Who: The Punic Wars were a series of 3 wars fought between 264-146 B.C.E. Involving the citizens of Rome vs. the citizens of Carthage.
Where: In order to check my thoughts and notes, I googled where each war took place. According to my research, the first Punic War was fought in North Africa, the second one in Gallia Narbonesis, and the third in Tunisia.
Why: You may be asking yourself, "Why?", "Why fight?". And honestly, I don't know why either, but according to the Romans, the first war was fought for control of the island of Sicily, which was a very strategically placed island. The second Punic War was ignited by a man called 'Hannibal'. He was pretty upset that Rome had the audactiy to defeat his people, so he took over on the Carthage side and began to fight and command. He even rode on the backs of elephants to cross the Alps, just so he could make an entrance when he launched his attack (it didn't really work out in his favor though). The third, and final, Punic War was fought because Rome got sick and tired of Carthage and their threats. The Romans attacked their city and burnt it for 17 days straight. After the city was destroyed, the remaining citizens (about 50,000 people) were sold into slavery and the rest Carthage was made into the Roman province of Africa.
How: I honestly do not know how the two groups were able to handle all of that fighting for so long, but they did. The wars were bloody, and the story of Hannibal riding on an elephant just to be extra makes me laugh. But the point is, the wars were fought with swords, shields, ships, and spears, etc. and that made them hard to hear about, but it made the citizens want to fight more, so they did just that.

In the end, Rome was victorious and all the Carthage slaves moved into Italy. Italy then had over a million slaves in their territory now, and farmers lost their land to the aristocrats (for almost no money) because they could not pay their debts, especially if the man who owned the farm was fighting in the wars. Naturally, slaves had to do all the work for the rich people on their farms, and the really big farms became massive estates called 'Latifundia'.

Here is a picture of Hannibal riding on elephant back through the Alps.
Hannibal's crossing in the Alps may have been marked by piles of ...

That is all for todays blog.
Thank you for reading and have a great weekend!
