More Notes From Chi Cago

Today I will be finishing taking notes from Chi Cago's study guide.

Notes:

Aftermath to the Murder
- Caesar's grandnephew/ adopted son, Octavian, takes over thrown at age 18
- Has his own Triumvirate (the second one)
   - Mark Antony (experienced general)
   - Lepedus (powerful politician)
A Doomed Alliance
- Octaviun forces Lepudus into retirement, and he becomes rivals with Mark Antony
Mark Antony joins forces with Cleopatra (of Egypt)
   - Militarily
   - Politically
   - Economically
   - Personally
- They are defeated by Octavian at th Battle of Actium
Octavian on His Own
- He is now unchallenged ruler of Rome
- Renamed 'Augustus' (means "Exalted one")
- Given the title "Imperator" (Supreme military commander)
- Where the word "emperor" comes from
- Rome is now an empire (no longer a republic)
He ain't no Tarquin
- Ruled for 40 years (27 BC to AD 14)
- Began a stable era of peace and prosperity (known as Pax Romana, which means 'Roman Peace')
- Peace was 207 years long (27 BC to AD 180)
Some Accomplishments...
- Expanded empire further into Africa
- Set up civil service to run government/Empire
   - Built network of roads
   - Collecting taxes
   - Establishing a postal service
   - Administering grain supply
   - Buliding cool public facilities
      > Buildings, aqueducts
   - Setting up a police department
   - running a fire fighting organization
- Finally died of natural causes
Age of Emporers
- After the death of ctavian, power was given to emporers
- some were good, some were horrible, some were completely insane
         
 Lets take a look at some emporers...
Tiberius
- Ruled from AD 14 to AD 37
- Excellent general, reluctant ruler
- After his son died, he exiled himself from Rome and gave his power to his prefects
- Died at age 77
Caligula
- Ruled for 4 years, AD 37 to AD 41
- Won a power struggle after Tiberius died
- Known for his cruelty, extravagance, and perversity (insane tyrant)
- Assasinated by group of Praetorian guards, Senators, and the imperial court, trying to re-establish the Republic (newsfash: It didn't work)
Claudias
- Ruled from AD 41 to Ad 54
- Suffered with a limp, stammering, shaking, and slobbering (could have been because of cerebral palsy)
- Took over because he was the last adult male in the family
- Ruled well: built roads, aqueducts, canals, and started the conquest of Britian
- Died by poison (his last wife planned it because she wanted her son, Nero, to take over)
Nero
- Ruled from AD 54 to AD 68
- Emphasized the arts
- Mega fire in 64 (he DID NOT fiddle)
- wanted to rebuild Rome to be more majestic
- hugely overspent and even raided the temples for money (shame on him)
- historians don't think too fondly of him
