Day 2 of Coronacation: The Plague of Pericles

Today we continued to watch our videos on Greece and what their lifestyle was like. Our section today was all about Plague. Brought over during the war with Sparta, this plague was a nasty one. It struck down the town of Athens and many people who contracted it took their own lives. The plague was so bad that it was described as "almost beyond the capacity of human nature". With chills, aches, fevers, eye swelling, and consistent diarrhea, this plague was enough to make the city of Athens a horrible place to be at that time. Pericles plan to make Athens a wonderful city-state was cut short when he was struck with the plague himself. After six grueling months, Pericles was dead. With him gone, it took Athens a long time figure out what they needed to do. After Athens realized that Pericles was their lifeline, they knew they needed a new leader who was going to be just as good, if not better, than he was. Even those who hated him while he was in power missed him greatly. The changes in Athens were quick and confusing, and it is going to take someone great to pull them back up to the top. That is all for today, and I hope we can find out what happens tomorrow. Have a good day!
