Take a Test and Write Some Notes...

I will be taking the test on Ancient Rome on Tuesday, June 2nd during my class time, which is 1:25-2:15 pm.

Notes:

Poor Plebs
- keep the plebs from revolting by using bread and circuses.
- bread and entertainment kept the plebs alive, quiet, distracted, and docile.
A Change in Rule
- While he was unsuccesful, Tiberius Gracchus saw advantages in courting the plebs
- military leads army to conquer land, and then share their spoils
- soilders were loya to their leaders, not exactly Rome or Republic
Caesar
- 100-44 BCE
- very successful general
- conquered gaul
- made commoners happy
- made friends with higher class
   - Pompey (conquered Syria and Palestine)
   - Crassus (richest man in Rome, one of richest men in all history)
- three men were first Triumvirate
"Crossing the Rubicon"
- he crossed the point of no return
Caesar Seizing Power
- serves as consul
- made himself governor of Gaul
- Pompey = Jealous, becomes Caesars enemy
- their armies clash in Greece, Asia, Spain, and Egypt (Caesar wins)
- 44 BC he is named dictator (starts at 6 months, then for life)
Caesar's Reforms
- granted citizenship for province residents
- expanded senate and added his friends
- made jobs for poor, especially public work projects
- increased soldiers pay
- made colonies where people with no land could own property
"Sic semper tyrannis!"
- "Thus always to tyrants!"
Assassination
- Why? Senators saw Caesar’s rise in power as threat to their political viability
- How? Lured him into the Senate, stabbed him 23 times, made sure all were involved
- Who? Even Brutus, Caesar’s friend
- Senators were not punished
- Octavian named Julius Caesar’s sole heir
- Basically, this is the end of the republic

That is all for this blog today, and thank you for reading!
- Karlee :)
