Fertile Cresent: A peice of land that has a cresent shape and was good for growing crops
Mesopotamia: a historical region of Western Asia situated within the Tigris–Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent
city-state: a sovereign microstate that usually consists of a single city and its dependent territories
dynasty: a line of hereditary rulers of a country
Cultural diffusion: the spreading out of culture, culture traits, or a cultural pattern from a central point
Polytheism: the belief in many gods
Empire: a group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government: usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom
Hammurabi: 18th century b.c. or earlier, king of Babylonia

What were three environmental challenges to the sumerians?
1. Extreme and unexpected drought/flooding
2. They had no natural barriers to protect them from attacks
3. they had limited natural resources for shelter and weapons
